SCRIP Intro Crime Reduction Advice

Successful Partnerships

We believe that businesses should work together with enforcement agencies if they are to impact upon the level of business crime. SCRIP therefore, operates the radio system to help to increase awareness of criminal activity in the town and to enforce partnership exclusion schemes for example, whereby known offenders can be excluded from all member premises.

SCRIP also conducts an intelligence meeting every Thursday morning for members to review criminal activity over the previous week and assess the risks for the week ahead. The meeting is based on the weekly criminal intelligence bulletin, which details offenders’ criminal activity and features relevant CCTV images. The operations director creates the bulletin with intelligence that is gathered and forwarded by members in the scheme.

Identifying Potential Offenders

We feel that businesses should be well informed as to who may commit an offence. Consequently, SCRIP has enabled us to identify Swindon town’s prolific offenders. Members can obtain images and profiles of these offenders so they can be identified.
We have also identified the main types of offenders for different types of crime within the town.

For example, customer theft is likely to be committed by people who are influenced by the opportunity that presents itself to them. We therefore ask stores to take care over the products they display. Juveniles also pose a particular threat, especially if in groups and we suggest that stores limit the number allowed into the store.

Situational Crime Prevention

SCRIP emphasises the importance of situational crime prevention, which is the prevention of crime through physical security. For example, CCTV maybe used to deter and identify offenders and to protect staff and customers from all types of violence. It also allows us to share criminal intelligence locally and nationally. The use of dummy display goods, security cabinets, mirrors and display alarms are also effective measures.

Potential offenders can be easily identified and deterred. Offenders can be detained then banned or arrested depending on the severity of the offence. The effective communication and cooperation between SCRIP members makes it possible to efficiently and effectively gather enough evidence for the prosecution of offenders.

In our experience, a good understanding of criminal behaviour and an effective partnership results in a reduction in business crime.
