SCRIP Intro What We'll Do For You

Business Crime

At SCRIP we define business crime as being any crime and disorder that affects local businesses and threatens the safety of their customers and/or staff.

All forms of business crime have a detrimental effect on the town’s economy. Retail stores suffer direct losses due to theft and fraud, and many businesses are indirectly affected by street crime. We view street crime as being any crime and disorder that takes place in public places. It can lead to a reduced number of people coming into the centre as they are discouraged by issues such as criminal damage, large groups of youths, beggars and other Anti-Social Behaviour. This clearly limits the opportunity for a thriving economy in the town centre.

It is our primary concern to reduce business crime in Swindon for the benefit of the whole community. We aim to make Swindon a safer town for all who shop, work and live in the town. We therefore respond to all types of retail crime including violence against staff, customer theft, employee theft, fraud, and to all types of street crime.
In an effort to increase staff awareness of business crime, the member’s site informs you of the most common crimes and scams that take place in Swindon. It guides you through the best measures to take in attempting to prevent such crimes, and explains the correct procedure for dealing with the occurrence of crime.

What We Offer

At SCRIP we offer advice and support for the reduction of business crime and implement a number of different measures designed to prevent and detect crime.

We provide a radio membership system that links members, the inSwindon Street Team and the Police. We also have access to CCTV across the town enabling us to collect data on all individuals carrying out criminal activity.

We gather, collate, exchange, process and manage all information relating to crime within Swindon and the surrounding area. This information is presented during a weekly intelligence meeting and forms the SCRIP bulletin, which keeps you and your staff well informed.

The Street Team coordinates the effective running of operations on the street, whilst providing a reassuring presence in the town. The Team can be contacted by radio or phone any time during the day to deal with any concerns that you may have.
We are regularly devising and implementing crime reduction initiatives, such as running campaigns to increase staff awareness of counterfeit £20 notes. We make every effort to make Swindon safer by, for example, focusing our attention on prolific offenders and reducing the incidence of anti-social behaviour in the town.

SCRIP Radio Network

The Radio Network is managed by a fully automated computer system called Safetynet. Safetynet manages the network, monitoring and recording all calls. The scheme links businesses, security officers, council departments, the Police, the inSwindon Street Team and, members of pubwatch to increase awareness of all criminal activity across the town.
The Brunel, SBC and Parade Management Control Rooms also have radios to enable CCTV operators to communicate directly with security operatives using the network. This allows for an early and accurate assessment of situations to be made so those involved can respond accordingly, making the high quality CCTV system even more effective.

The radio network makes businesses more secure as it prevents staff from working in isolation. Radio operatives can request assistance in the event of incidents such as violence, theft, robbery, disorder, and missing persons. Essentially, businesses and their staff become part of a team ensuring Swindon is a safer place.
All of the users pay an annual SCRIP membership fee for their radios at a very reasonable cost and sign up to the Data Protection Protocols in order to comply with the law.
